The TELUS Summer Visions Film Institute is an award-winning digital filmmaking program for youth 14-19, running since 1999 and produced by the Education Department at Pacific Cinémathèque and Dream Big Productions at Templeton Secondary School. Neither a summer camp nor a school, Summer Visions creates a unique and inspired atmosphere. Intense, creative youth work in production teams to write, shoot, edit and screen a short digital video, supported by a staff of experienced, respectful, and challenging filmmakers and mentors. Videos, premiered at our downtown Gala and Awards Ceremony in September, often go on to win awards across the country.

———————————

In the first week of the program, students learn how to creatively use digital video cameras, applying the cinematographer’s tools of composition and camera technique to their film ideas.  Story and script development happens in small teams; learning film conventions and cinematic language helps participants to find their own voices, with image, sound, and story becoming a part of their formal pitch.  This whirlwind week ends with camera and sound workshops, location scouting, acting and directing workshops, casting, prop and costume development, and preparation for the exciting shoot-to-come.

The first day of Week 2 starts with a bang: the shooting begins!  First thing on Monday, groups head out with equipment, actors, and their production plans, ready to start capturing their films.  Each day the footage (rushes) are reviewed, and by the end of the second day, it’s time to start loading the video in for editing.  Participants learn professional software (Final Cut Studio) and tap in to the editor’s toolbox to transform rough shots into finished, sound-designed masterpieces in time for Friday’s Rough Cut Screening.  It’s an incredible rush as friends and family gather to see the hard-earned results of two weeks of creativity on the big screen, rivalled only by our downtown Gala and Awards Ceremony in September, and many films’ film festival tours across the country.

Of course, there’s much more to this program than can be described here.  Come join us this summer to find out why so many people love the rush of the Summer Visions experience.
